Dear Client,
The studio is booming with
success and the month of May will see us introducing a new Saturday Tower class,
a special Laughter Yoga Workshop (as featured on Oprah).
We have launched our
MindBodyOnline system on May 1st and have had a number of positive responses
on it's ease of use. Many of our clients have reached out to us to let us know
how much they appreciate the new way of signing up for Mat and Tower classes, as
well as for Private sessions.
The sense of excitement
is palpable at the studio and if you don't already come to our
studio regularly, we hope that you swing by and partake in some of
these new offerings.
I hope to see you soon in our studio,
Deborah Harris

INTRODUCTION TO
AYURVEDA (Part I)
By Swapna Gangadharan
|

Introduction
to Ayurveda
Just as the ancients of
India practiced Yoga for spiritual awareness, they also
incorporated the science of Ayurveda to complete the
mind-body-spirit holistic healing. According to them, one was not independent of
the other. Just as Yoga created physical and mental harmony, Ayurveda did the
same by focusing on holistic healing.
Introduction & History
But what is Ayurveda?
In Sanskrit, the language of Yoga, used by the ancients, 'Ayur' means 'Life' and
'Veda' means 'Knowledge.’ Ayurveda means the knowledge of life and unlike the
present conventional medicinal treatments, which look at specific parts of the
body based on specific ailment; Ayurveda looked at healing the whole system. In
ancient times, Ayurvedic healers were not just doctors but psychiatrists,
mentors and nutritionists who offered a balanced approach to living life fully.
The History of Ayurveda
dates back to 2000 BC, though there are diverse opinions on its origin. When
ancient India was in the period of 'Vedas,’ there was profound understanding of
the cosmic energy from the ancient sages. These sages preserved such wisdom in
the oral and written form of tradition.
|
Ayurveda was first
mentioned in a few of these early narratives. In several of these and subsequent
narratives, Ayurveda was mentioned in various references as 'healing arts'
dealing with various aspects of health care right from digestive care, mental
health care and methods to get rid of ailments by using herbal medicinal plants.
Combined with such medicinal aspects, they documented ways to get rid of the
negative energy within the self; covering mental, emotional and physical
aspects. These age-old principles have evolved to current times while preserving
the core of their ancient traditions.
Who
is the founder?
Similar to the mystery
and legends around Patanjali, who is considered to be the founder of Yoga,
Dhanwantari, is considered the founder of Ayurveda. Some legends mention him as
the 'Healing God - the one who holds the nectar of everlasting immortality;’ at
the same time, some of the legends also write about a certain sage Dhanwantari
who first wrote down the science of healing. |

Article on Ayurvedic healing in the upcoming June e-Newsletter. The second half
of her series will focus on the foundations of Ayurvedic system, as well as on
its modern applications. |

FINDING YOUR OWN PRIVATE PRACTICE IN A GROUP CLASS!
by Carly Hamlette
|
|
Private lessons are a terrific way to experience a one-on-one session that is
completely catered to your body. But, in between those private lessons, you may
want to participate in one of the many group classes at Premier Pilates & Yoga.
The Tower class, duet classes, and our Yoga and Pilates mat classes are all
great compliments to regular private lessons. But can you find your own private
practice while in a group class? Yes!
Read
our five tips on how you can get the most out of a group class:
-
When
looking around a group class you can see a beautiful variety of people. We
all have various strengths, body types, and likes. Yet, all you have to do
is listen to what your body tells you.
-
Don’t be uncomfortable asking for modifications if a movement doesn’t feel
right to you.
|
-
Try
not to match what the others in the class are doing, and instead focus on
finding your own edge, not somebody else’s.

-
Honor what you can do and focus on the possibility of going further.
-
Don’t get frustrated! Know that with regular practice, even the most
challenging of movements will improve.
All
these tips will allow you to enjoy a wonderful private class in a group
setting.
Most importantly, enjoy the private time you have with your mind, body, and
spirit! |
