routine.
In this issue we introduce
you to our newest instructor Sky, describe the upcoming schedule
changes, and announce an exciting new workshop: "Yoga for
Two."
Also, this month we focus
on neck & shoulder pain, and what can be done to obtain
relief. We hope that you enjoy this newsletter and find it

AN
EXCITING NEW ONE-DAY WORKSHOP:
"Yoga for Two" - A Meditative Yoga Workshop
with Swapna
On
August 24th 5:45-7PM we will be offering a special one-day "Yoga for Two"
Workshop. This class will blend ancient and modern yoga to bring the focus on
the self as well as the relationship with the partner. We utilize the forms and
principles of individual postures while incorporating the presence of a partner
to deepen the impact of each pose.
This workshop will explore the inner emotions within you as well as your partner
while learning and reiterating the trust, love, stability and support for each
other. This workshop is designed to foster the spiritual, emotional and mental
connection between two kindred spirits.
DESCRIPTION
The class is by no means
limited to couples. Rather we envision this as a perfect workshop for friends,
mothers and daughters, sisters, brothers, etc.
Cost: You may use your class card to attend this workshop or come as a
drop-in and bring the $20/person fee. We are limiting the class to no more than
6 couples and are asking people to let us know in advance if they are planning on attending
this exciting workshop.

INTRODUCING SKY SPIEGEL: The newest
addition to our Yoga family!
With
a background in theatre, music and dance, Sky carries her penchant for
creativity into her teaching of yoga. Originally from Miami Beach, FL, she moved
to NYC to go to Barnard College and stayed on in New York to pursue a career on
Broadway. While doing so, she began studying yoga at Be Yoga in order to focus
her energy, relieve stress, build both physical and spiritual strength, and gain
flexibility in all senses of the word. Before long, she began her teacher
training at that very same studio under the tutelage of Alan Finger, Jean Koerner and Beverley Murphy in the ISHTA system of yoga.
ISHTA means "individual" in Sanskrit and is an acronym for the Integrated
Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda. This form of yoga encompasses many
styles including Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, and of course Hatha. All physical
yoga practice, no matter what the deemed "style" is in fact Hatha yoga. Ha = sun
and Tha = moon, thus symbolizing the universal balance created by yoga. In the
Tantric philosophy of yoga, duality is seen as non-existent, merely a
construction of the everyday plane of consciousness. By looking beyond duality
we realize that enlightenment, bliss, perfection is already here, or rather, we
are already there. Sky makes it a point to keep this philosophy as a basis of
her teachings, so even though her classes focus on the physical elements of
yoga, from alignment to purification and breathing techniques, this beautiful
ethos is the driving force behind it all.
After
teaching for three years in NYC at various studios, including Be Yoga (now Yoga
Works), she has happily moved out to Morristown, NJ. Sky takes the time to soak
in the natural beauty of her new environment by really exploring this great
state, whether it's hiking, golfing, or doing yoga on the beach or in a park.
So often we lose perspective on our own surroundings, our own realities, and
sometimes we need to step outside our patterned viewpoints in order to help us
appreciate and honor what we have in this moment, right now. Sky brings a
vibrant awareness into her teaching by reminding students of the very reciprocal
nature of one's life and one's yoga practice.
Aside from teaching yoga, Sky is a high school English teacher in Bernardsville,
and she is involved in a theatre company based out of Brooklyn, NY. Her love for
language and expression comes through in her everyday life, but especially in
her teaching life. |
NECK & SHOULDER PAIN:
What you can do?
|
Your
neck and shoulders contain muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, and veins, as well
as many ligaments and other supporting structures. Many conditions can cause
pain in the neck and shoulder area. Some are life threatening (such as a heart
and major trauma), and others are not so dangerous (such as simple strains or
contusions). Most shoulder and neck pain results from injury to muscles and
ligaments.
All
pain seems sharp, but pain can also be described as dull, burning, crampy,
shocklike, or stabbing. Weakness can be due to severe pain from muscle or bone
movement. The nerves connecting to the muscles, however, also could be injured.
It is important to distinguish true weakness (muscle or nerve damage) from
inability or reluctance to move because of pain or inflammation.
After a thorough investigation of the cause of pain by a physician, most people
pursue a course of massage, gentle stretching, & physical therapy. In many
cases, however, the relief is incomplete with these traditional approaches. Some
alternative therapies have been shown to offer long-lasting relief.
Pilates
As those who have done it will attest, Pilates is a challenging form of exercise
that is excellent for the prevention of back & neck pain and injury.
Pilates is also effective after the initial phases of an injury have passed, to
help heal, stretch and strengthen. When Pilates is taught by the qualified
professionals at our studio, it is effective in posture education, which helps
prevent re-injury.

Yoga
Yoga is a practice of meditation, spiritualism, and physical disciplines that
has quickly become a very popular mainstream alternative for stress reduction,
increasing core strength, and correcting posture. A series of simple poses and
stretching exercises can help strengthen the neck, shoulders, chest, spine and
abdomen
while
focusing on improving and releasing tension and stress that contribute to neck
and shoulder discomfort. Specifically, Cat,
Dog, Cobra, Upward Bow, Downward Facing Dog, are all terrific for this purpose.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture
can effectively address this pain, as well as the muscular dysfunction that it
typically
accompanies. Supplementing traditional acupuncture with trigger point
injections,
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and
Neuroanatomical
Acupuncture can quickly deliver some terrific results.
One typically sees a major decrease in the
severity of symptoms within 3-4 sessions, even if the pain is chronic. In
most cases there is a lasting effect from acupuncture and a significant decrease
in neck tension allowing for optimal health and function.
Perhaps, even more importantly, acupuncture can
effectively address the insomnia, fatigue, headaches, anxiety and depression
that often accompany a chronically painful neck and shoulders. |
|
David Boguslavsky, MD has just launched Premier Medical Acupuncture,
a holistic medical practice geared towards integrating acupuncture into every
patient encounter. Look for his series of articles in the upcoming newsletters
on Chinese medicinal approach to such common illnesses as insomnia, irritable
bowel syndrome, and headaches. If you
are interested in reaching him for a consultation, please call (908) 938-7717.

ODDS & ENDS
|

Look for a CBS News story featuring Budokon in the New York Area. Oksana
Fitzmaurice has been asked to participate in the story. Another proof that this
amazing form of exercise is gaining in popularity!
As an aside, we are still the only studio in New Jersey
where you can take a Budokon class from a teacher trained and certified
by Sensei Cameron Shayne, the creator of the Budokon system and personal instructor
to Jennifer Aniston.
In the coming
months we will be bringing you a number of amazing new workshops. Already in the
works are the "Yoga Hip Opener Workshop" and a Nia Workshop. Nia is a cardiovascular blend
of dance, martial and healing arts. It creatively integrates
movements, concepts, and philosophies by embracing the gifts of
healing arts, power and mindfulness of the martial arts, meditative
techniques, grace and fluidity of dance, and awareness and alignment
through integrative body therapies. Movement thus becomes
self-empowering and helps foster personal growth and improved sense
of well-being. Much like Budokon, Nia offers a creative and fun way
to stay in shape and let your body heal itself from the impact of
every-day stresses. If you already know that you are
interested in either of the two workshops please email me so that I
can gauge the level of interest in them.
