Dear <%=[FirstName]%>,
On July 5th we
will be celebrating our first anniversary at the new location. As
many of you will recall, the move was much delayed and new obstacles
kept appearing weekly. However, our patience was rewarded and now we have
an amazing, beautiful and peaceful space where we can practice Yoga,
Pilates and Budokon.
In this
issue we thought we would pause and take stock of all the different
classes available for our students and extend an open invitation to
come by, see what our studio is all about, and find a class that
best fits your personal goals, needs and schedule.
See you soon,
Deborah Harris

YOUR OPTIONS AT OUR STUDIO:
We have what you're looking for!

Private/Duet Pilates Instruction
We are the area's only fully-equipped Pilates
studio and have grown to have four outstanding instructors who are all
certified and superbly trained. Having so many instructors allows us to be
flexible and work with our clients' schedules. Having all the equipment
translates into our clients enjoying a varied workout that focuses on
helping each person reach her goal, whether her goal is a flat stomach or
weight loss/maintenance
Pilates Tower Classes
A
Tower Class is a group class that integrates the use of the Wall Unit
(Tower) with mat work.
Incorporating the use of Pilates
equipment makes the workout more strenuous and strengthens the
resistance training component of the routine.
This challenging class is usually recommended for clients who have taken
several private, semi-private and/or mat classes. These popular
classes are available by registration only as they are truly outstanding
and tend to fill up quickly.
Pilates Mat Classes
Pilates
gets your mind in tune with your body. By emphasizing proper breathing,
correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and complete concentration on
smooth, flowing movement, you become acutely aware of how your body
feels, where it is in space, and how to control its movement. The
quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. Proper
breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum
power and efficiency.

Vinyasa Yoga
means "breath-synchronized
movement." The poses flow from one to another in conjunction with the breath.
Vinyasa Yoga taught at our studio is a flowing, moving meditation of breath and
postures - stimulating, heating and purifying system of developing the body,
increasing mental clarity, and uplifting the soul.
Our
studio offers a class for a Yogi at every level of
training, from the very beginner to an advanced practitioner.
Meditative Moving Yoga -
a
combination of traditional Hatha Yoga with Ashtanga Yoga. It is suitable for
all beginners as well as regular Yoga practitioners. This flowing class will
go through an opening prayer, Pranayama, Sun Salutations, weight reducing
asanas and postures that will rejuvenate the mind and body, increase
flexibility, strength and stability. The class will end with 10 minutes of
meditation & relaxation, and finish with a closing prayer.

Budokon
- a fusion of Power Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation in one complete system.
The Budokon physical practice draws upon ancient and modern yogic and martial
arts styles. The foundation of the Budokon physical practice is precision,
alignment and Zen mind. All Budokon techniques are designed to explore the
bodies full range of motion. The practice dances between agility, control,
speed, power, balance & flow. The physical practice is divided into two themes:
The Budokon Yogic Series, and the Budo Series. Both themes constantly draw from
and depend on each other. The Budokon Yogic focus is on control, calm, power and
precision. These techniques are uniquely different from traditional hatha in the
sense that they not only work to improve range of motion and strength, but they
also explore the bodies ability to sustain another persons body weight as well.
The objective of the Budokon Budo series is to teach agility, power, focus and
flow in the body and mind.

Prenatal Yoga -
Yoga is truly ideal for
pregnant women. When practiced mindfully, yoga increases flexibility, strength,
circulation and balance. Pregnancy is a physical experience and a woman often
becomes hyperaware of the many changes her body is going through. Yoga allows
her to adapt more gracefully to these changes and to feel a sense of integration
and appreciation for her body. Many women find that regular yoga practice helps
to reduce swelling, back and leg pain, and insomnia. |
LOW BACK PAIN:
What has been
shown to work?
|
Low back pain affects millions of Americans every year.
Some of the clients in our studio get it episodically, whereas others live with
it every day. The traditional approach to back pain has always relied on
pharmaceuticals for treatment, yet there has been a great deal of research
recently that shows other modalities may be just as, or even more effective.
Yoga is an excellent therapy for healing sore and injured back muscles, reducing
recovery time, preventing re-injury, and reducing the risk of disability from
back pain. Yoga helps alleviate lower back pain by strengthening and stretching
the muscles of the lower back, reducing inflammation and increasing circulation
of blood and prana. Regular yoga practice also improves posture and body
mechanics, relieving pain and preventing injury by keeping the spine in proper
alignment. In a recent survey, 96% of respondents who practiced yoga reported
relief from persistent back pain, compared to 23% who were seeing neurosurgeons.
One of the most important recent changes in medicine, is the recognition of the
importance of self-management. The regular use of Pilates has been found to be
successful in preventing recurrent back pain episodes. Recent research from the
Physiotherapy Department at Queensland University by Richardson and Jull, has
demonstrated that by increasing the co-ordination and strength in the deep
abdominal muscles, i.e. transverse abdominals, that the lumbar spine is
stabilized and protected.
|
Last but not least, acupuncture has been found to be a useful modality in the
treatment of low back pain. From an acute back spasm to chronic pain due to a
herniated disk, acupuncture can treat it all. It works by releasing the
localized area of spasm and by cutting down local inflammation.
A physician
trained in neuro-anatomical acupuncture can go beyond the superficial approaches
and perform Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. This technique not only
addresses the segments of the spine influencing the area of injury but also the
autonomic innervation of the area. Supplementing traditional acupuncture
techniques with TENS and other unique treatments, a physician acupuncturist can
usually deliver some terrific results.
Like any other treatment modality, the response rate to acupuncture is not one
hundred percent. That said, most patients of a good physician acupuncturist
should be able to get off the treatment table with at least 30-40% improvement.
With each session, there is usually increasing improvement until the eventual
gradual and complete resolution of pain. |
My husband, David Boguslavsky MD, is launching Premier Medical Acupuncture,
a holistic medical practice geared towards integrating acupuncture into every
patient encounter. In the upcoming newsletters he will address some commonly
asked questions about acupuncture and, perhaps, do a series of articles on
Chinese medicinal approach to such common illnesses as insomnia, irritable bowel
syndrome, headaches, & chronic neck and shoulder pain. If you
are interested in reaching him for a consultation, please call (908) 938-7717.
