Meanwhile, our

and hope that you find the articles helpful. If the issues therein
don't pertain to you yet, please feel free to forward the newsletter to
someone in your life who will find them more pertinent.

TWO NEW WORKSHOPS
NOW AT THE STUDIO:
Budokon
Bootcamp & Mommy & Me Yoga!
The first Budokon Bootcamp
has been so popular and challenging that we are starting a second 6-week Budokon
Workshop to run Tuesday mornings 9-10:15AM from May 9th to June 13th.
Budokon is a fusion of Power
Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation in one complete system. This system develops
strength of the body, sharpness of the mind, and serenity of the spirit. Having
taken the class personally I can tell you that it is one of the most challenging
workouts I've had. It works deeply the muscles of the arms, buttocks, abdomen,
all while letting out any aggression that pent up during the week. This highly
dynamic class is truly an amazing workout and I highly recommend it to anyone
interested in feeling stronger, more flexible and more empowered.
6 WEEK BUDOKON BOOTCAMP
-
$150 for 6 weeks
May 9th through June 13th, Tuesdays 9:00-10:15AM
If you are interested, please drop off your check
ASAP as we are making every effort to keep the class small
and I know this class is going to fill up quickly.

THE CHANGE OF LIFE:
The Naturopath's perspective on optimizing
health during the
peri-menopausal period
|
Peri-menopause is a
term used to describe the time in a woman’s life when there a shift in
regular menstrual patterns, beginning with the early, sometimes asymptomatic
hormonal changes through to the complete cessation of menstrual cycles.
Asymptomatic hormonal changes can occur as early as in the mid-30’s, and
peri-menopause can last for several years before its
completion.
Many women are
painfully aware of these changes, because of very unsettling symptoms. These
vary from woman to woman, however, studies comparing women in Asia with
their America counterparts have shown that dietary habits can dramatically
impact the occurrence and severity of such symptoms. The women
in Asia have
a predominantly vegetable and grain-based diet, rich in vegetables, fruit,
whole grains, beans and fermented soy
products (such as miso, tempeh, tofu), and limited dairy intake. For women
concerned about calcium consumption, adequate amounts of calcium can be
found in many alternative sources, such as dark green-leafy vegetables,
broccoli, sesame seeds, and fish with edible
bones… to name a few.
|
In addition, it is important to remember that hormones can be introduced into
the body through external sources like the diet, specifically those rich in
animal-based foods and food products that are not organic. This added hormonal
exposure can off-set the cycle in women of any age, and carries its own risks.
Dairy products are especially notable, because cow’s milk production is
hormonally driven, and when cows are treated with growth hormones and steroids,
these make their way into the milk. It is important to reduce the exposure to
these “xeno-estrogens” (hormones introduced into the body by food and the
environment), which can exacerbate the hormonally driven functions of the human
body. So, while every woman would benefit from consuming mostly organic foods,
women in their peri-menopausal years need to
take extra precaution
when it comes to food selection.
Diets high in fiber from vegetable and grain based
foods also aid in the bowel clearance of excessive hormones to prevent their
recirculation through the body. In the peri-menopausal woman, there are more
dramatic hormonal peaks and valleys in the body, which is what causes
many of
the unpleasant symptoms. Herbs can also be used effectively to manage the
symptoms of these dramatic hormonal fluctuations, but are best selected on an
individual basis for efficacy. |

PILATES: An essential ingredient in the
recipe for peri-menopausal health!
|
As our bodies mature our metabolism begins to slow down. Our
bodies begin to lose bone density and lean muscle mass. Furthermore, these years can be a
time of increased emotional stress as we may be raising teenagers or preparing
ourselves for the empty nest around the corner. All of these factors can lead to weight gain, changes in
our bodies
and
a general feeling of having less energy to do the things we used to do without a
second thought.
Proper nutrition and exercise already play a major role in our emotional and physical
well being throughout our lives, but they become ever more important during this time.
Exercise can be
especially effective in countering the ill effects of time and in reversing some of
the byproducts of aging. Aerobic exercise raises metabolism and promotes
cardiovascular fitness, lowers heart rate, and allows the heart to pump blood
more efficiently. It also facilitates a reduction in body fat and increases
calorie burning. For optimal health it is recommended that you exercise a
minimum of 20 minutes, 4 to 5 times a week, longer if
weight loss is your goal.
Choose an activity that you enjoy and begin slowly. Allow your body and mind
to adapt to the changes. Be patient with yourself. Consistency is the key to
success.
Proper execution of all
exercises is of the utmost importance to injury prevention and the most optimal
results. As such, it is
strongly
recommended that you seek the guidance of a professional, either through a class
environment or privately. |
Strength and
conditioning training promotes increased bone density, improved body composition
(fat vs. lean muscle
mass), improved glucose metabolism, improved blood lipids,
decreased resting blood
pressure, improved physical functioning and increased metabolism.
This is the area where
Pilates truly shines!
By its design
Pilates
is a form of exercise and physical movement created to stretch, strengthen
and balance the body.
The many benefits derived when practiced faithfully are increased lung capacity
and circulation, strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back
muscles, improved coordination, posture, core strength, and improved bone
density and joint health. As you can see, Pilates is an invaluable fitness
endeavor. Because it is a program of focused breathing patterns coupled with
specific
exercises,
it lends itself to allow you to leave the stress of the world outside and focus
just on you. As a woman who is first-hand experiencing these difficult years of
change, I can tell you that adding Pilates to my exercise routine made a world
of difference in my physical and emotional well-being. Also, it has allowed me to achieve the
results I have never been able to reach without it.
Educating yourself
regarding nutrition and exercise is the best motivation to get on the path to a
healthier lifestyle. Once you step on this path, reach out to us and we
will guide you all the way to success! |
