Dear Client,

Most people, women and men alike, could use more physical exercise, stretching and relaxation in their lives. It is an unfortunate fact that the speed at which we lead our lives forces our bodies to always function on overdrive. Such persistent pressure often leads to fatigue and insomnia, as well as to tense upper back and shoulders, and chronically painful lower back - all areas where our stress tends to manifest itself. Men are particularly susceptible to these effects of chronic stress and generally benefit a great deal from doing any form of regular physical exercise. Massage, Pilates, and Yoga can all be effective tools for easing and relaxing the mind while strengthening the body - physically, emotionally, and spiritually!

We devote this issue to Men's Health. I hope you find it helpful and pass it along to those people in your life who may benefit.

BUDOKON: Hollywood's latest fitness craze
arrives to our studio in full force!

Budokon, has become Hollywood's latest fitness craze. Actress Rene Russo was the first convert to this fusion of yoga, martial arts and meditation and was swiftly followed by Courtney Cox, also of Friends fame, and her actor husband, David Arquette, who then both recommended it to Jennifer Aniston.

The literal translation of Budokon is "the way of the spiritual warrior." Budokon is a fusion of Power Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation in one complete system. This system develops strength of the body, sharpness of the mind, and serenity of the spirit.

The four main elements of the Budokon system are mind, body, spirit and power. Budokon allows a person of any physical condition to experience martial arts and yoga in a noncompetitive and holistically beneficial way. Budokon is a union of yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) energies. Yin energy arises from yoga practice (stillness). Yang energy arises from martial arts practice (explosive movement). Stillness of the mind is achieved through meditation. The practice of Budokon brings your mind, body, and spirit together in a harmonious union.

Budokon Founder Cameron Shayne

We are the only studio in New Jersey to have a Budokon-certified instructor who was trained by Kancho Shayne, the personal Budokon instructor to Jennifer Aniston.

Budokon classes are high energy fast paced classes that are excellent for improving your cardiovascular, building lean muscle, and developing your self-esteem. The combination of 30 minutes of flexibility-enhancing yoga, followed by another 30 minutes of body-toning karate kicks is topped off by meditation. This high energy atmosphere keeps most people coming back for more.

MEN'S HEALTH: A Few Tips From The Doctor
These days men tend to lead a life in such a fast pace that little time is left to enjoy the prizes of their success.

Understanding that most readers of this newsletters are female, I beseech you to take a look at your husbands' health and critically see what it is missing. Then encourage them to get on the path to health that you've been treading for years. If they are anything like me, they'll  resist the change initially but be grateful in the end as they begin to reap the benefits: less sickness, less stress, fewer aches and pains.

Take heed of these messages I pass on to all of my over-successful and under-relaxed male patients:

EAT HEALTHY
Eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day and less saturated fat can help improve your health and may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Have a balanced diet, and watch how much you eat.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Obesity is at an all time high in the United States, and the epidemic may be getting worse. Those who are overweight or obese have increased risks for such diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

LIVE SMOKE-FREE
Health concerns associated with smoking include cancer and lung disease. Smoking triples the risk of dying from heart disease among those who are middle-aged. If you smoke, quit today! Acupuncture,  counseling, medications, and other forms of support are widely available to help men quit
.

GET ROUTINE EXAMS
Each man should be seeing his doctor yearly and be checked for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and cancers of the skin, prostate, and colon. When the problems are found early, chances for treatment and cure are significantly better. Routine exams and screenings can help save lives.

MANAGE STRESS
Protect mental and physical health by engaging in activities that help manage  stress at work and at home.

LIVE WELL
Health is not merely the absence of disease; it's a lifestyle. Whether it's getting enough sleep, relaxing after a stressful day, or enjoying a hobby, it is important to take time to be good to oneself. Take steps to balance work, home, and play. Pay attention to your health, and make healthy living a key part of your life.

PILATES & YOGA FOR MEN:
  Get the power,
  Keep the stretch!

Pilates is an exceptional exercise technique for core strengthening, flexibility, and developing a lean, strong physique. Pilates best trains the seven physical performance factors: posture, balance, mobility/flexibility, stability, coordination, functional strength and endurance. For elite athletes, theses skills are essential; but just about everyone will benefit from enhancing these.

Women have gravitated towards Pilates because of the positive impact of the technique on the spinal instability, rotated pelvis and knock-knees due to the inherent issues of a body designed to accommodate childbearing.
Most men have different issues. They have limited flexibility, weak pelvic floor and postural muscles, which eventually leads to injury. There is a growing interest among men in Pilates. Many professional football, basketball and alpine ski athletes are practicing Pilates. Tiger Woods, perhaps the greatest golfer of all time has incorporated Pilates into his training program.

Most men who exercise regularly are strong but very tight. They have built the body from the “outside” and not from the “inside” as is done in Pilates. Some men will say that even though they have been lifting weights for 20 years there is still something missing. They are absolutely right - it’s called flexibility!

Most men have incredibly tight calf and hamstring muscles and are frequently even unable to sit straight with their legs outstretched. Although strength training is very important, lengthening the muscles through stretching is just as critical. That is exactly where Pilates can help. It's effects on enhancing flexibility and loosening up the tight muscles lead to a leaner, healthier, and more relaxed body.

With that said, Yoga is the ideal compliment to Pilates, and we have a number of men who combine the two to obtain the best results. It's been refreshing to see how quickly men realize that Yoga and Pilates are not nearly as easy as they thought.

So, could Pilates & Yoga be the two perfect techniques for getting most men to exercise regularly? We think so, as do many of our male clients!

PILATES DUET:
    An ideal option for many!

We frequently hear from people who are interested in doing Pilates with a partner. Often it's someone who wants to work out with their spouse, a friend or anyone we match them up with. People enjoy the duets, because not only do they get to use all the wonderful pieces of Pilates equipment, but they get to do it with someone they like, and at a rate of only $45 per person per session.

We currently have someone looking for a duet partner on Mondays at 12PM. Please let me know if that is a time you might be interested in, or if you, yourself, might be looking for a duet partner for a different time. We will do our best to match you up with someone at a similar level of Pilates knowledge so that it is a fun experience for both of you.

ZINC'S IMPORTANCE IN MEN'S HEALTH

Zinc is found in at least some amount of all organs/tissues throughout the body, with significant levels in the eye, kidney, brain, liver, muscle, and male reproductive organs (prostate, prostate secretions, and spermatozoa). You may have been aware of the numerous health benefits of zinc, including but not limited to:
  • Preventing or shortening the duration of the common cold and general immune function,
  • Nourishing the skin, hair, and nails by enhancing the production and renewal of collagen (the structural foundation of skin) and for the structure of bones
  • Important for insulin activity
  • Improving wound healing

When zinc levels are low, many functions of the body are compromised. As the focus of this month’s newsletter is Men’s Health, whether you are one or for the men in your life, it is important to know the key sources of zinc in the diet for optimal health and prevention of disease.

Excellent sources of zinc include nuts and seeds, particularly pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, pecans, whole grain breads and cereals, egg yolks, herring, oysters and lean meats.

As it is always better to get your nutrition from your food as the primary source of various nutrients, this should be your focus for balanced intake. If you would like to add a supplement to your daily intake, aim for a ‘chelated’ product, such as zinc picolinate or zinc citrate. Since zinc has a tendency to upset the stomach, opt for low potency tablets, in 15-, 20-, or 30-mg increments, taken with food and plenty of water. Daily intake of such supplements should be between 50 and 150 mg daily.

When there is dysfunction in the male reproductive system, medicinal herbs can be incorporated at therapeutic levels to address such issues as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), low libido, urinary disturbances, and other concerns. For example, saw palmetto has gained tremendous popularity in recent years for its benefits on the male reproductive system, and is one of many herbs used therapeutically--or for prevention of--various men’s health issues. Various forms of Ginseng have also proven beneficial as well as a host of additional herbs, taken in the proper amounts and frequency.

This article was prepared by Medical Herbalist, Tami Bronstein. She has a Clinic for Herbal Medicine in Highland Park, and also provides home-visit massage therapy throughout the tri-state area. To see if herbal therapy can be the right fit for you or your spouse,  please feel free to call Tami at 908.915.1998.

Dear Client,

I hope you have found this newsletter informative and that it prompts you and/or your spouse, to see us soon at the studio. We have a lot of terrific classes and I hope that you get to experience them firsthand.

Sincerely,

Deborah Harris
