Vitamin
C with Bioflavonoids
Amongst the many nutrients
essential for cardiovascular health, you may be surprised to know the value of
Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids on maintaining a healthy heart and circulatory
system.
Vitamin C plays a major role in collagen
formation, which provides the structural foundation of skin and its
underlying connective tissue. Collagen support is critical for
the integrity and strength of the capillaries
and major blood vessels, providing the support within the walls of
the vessels. Research indicates its role in reducing cholesterol, improving
cholesterol transportation in the body, improving the “good” HDL/total
cholesterol ratio in the blood, protecting the “bad” LDL cholesterol from being
oxidized by free radicals and--in turn--reducing the accumulation and adhesion
of plaque and other blood components to artery walls. Studies indicate that low
plasma levels of Vitamin C have been linked to increased risk for ischemic heart
disease and stroke.
Bioflavonoids
are a class of phytochemicals found in fruits, vegetables and plants. Many
Vitamin C supplements contain Bioflavonoids to increase absorption and enhance
the activity of the vitamin. Foods high in Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids include
brightly colored fruits and vegetables, such as citrus fruits, most berries
(blackberries, raspberries, strawberries), tomatoes, green peppers, dark green
leafy vegetables like kale and chard, cabbage, broccoli, asparagus, melons,
green peppers, and many others. Commonly used herbs for their high levels of
Vitamin C and Bioflavonoid content include Elderberry and Elderflower, Hawthorne
berries and flowers, Chamomile flowers, Yarrow, Gingko biloba, Sea Buckthorn
berries, Parsley, Common Plantain, Blackcurrant, Horsechestnut and many others.

The
Importance of ExerciseEvery year
more women die from a heart attack in this country than from all the cancers
combined. There is a lot of attention paid to the cholesterol-lowering
medications, to baby aspirins, Plavix and numerous other medicines aimed at
controlling heart disease among women.
To keep your heart healthy I advise every
patient to take the following steps:
- Get tested regularly and know your numbers.
Every person should know what their blood sugar, cholesterol, and
blood pressure are.
- If you smoke, stop. Right now. Smoking is
more important than cholesterol as a risk factor for heart attacks, strokes
and numerous other conditions. Smoking cessation is more important thank
just about anything else one can do for their health.
- Exercise, exercise, exercise. Along with
proper nutrition, regular exercise keeps you trim, works out your
heart, and raises the good cholesterol, HDL. It's effect on stress
in unparalleled. With our society living a sedentary lifestyle it
is imperative that everyone gets out and exercises at least 4-5
times a week. Whether it is a 20-minute power-walk with a baby in
a stroller or a hardy Pilates class, do it for your heart and do
it regularly! Exercise with your kids to teach them the value of a
healthy lifestyle, while enjoying quality time together.

PRENATAL
WORKSHOPS:
If you know someone pregnant, please let them know
about this!
Our Prenatal workshops
are exploding in popularity and we anticipate launching Postnatal Pilates & Yoga
classes as well. I thought I would share with you some wonderful pictures along with
some nice words we've received from our pregnant Yoginis:
"This yoga class has meant so much to me and has
been a tremendous experience for my body and soul. I missed class on Sunday
because I was away but spent 30 minutes in my room practicing the poses that
I've learned and found that it made such a difference."
"I felt your workshop
was very helpful! I was much more relaxed and slept
better at night...
The tightness in my legs,
hips and shoulders went away... And my breathing
was focused."
The dates for the next 2 workshops are as follows:
-
Sundays 11AM-12PM, from February 19th for 6
consecutive weeks through March 26th
-
Wednesday Nights 6-7PM, from March 15th
though April 19th
The space is somewhat limited, and we are starting
the pre-registration process now - please let us know soon if you or someone you
know is interested. |
